Long neglected sound
October 23, 2008 22:19 (over 3 years ago)
Recently, I have been plowing through the dusty parts of my music collection. Some of the old tunes re-ignited my enthusiasm for long forgotten bands, the classics of my distant, uhm, youth. I felt inclined to spread the word. Well… the one combo that I am still feeding off, nearly daily, is CAKE. The unique style, strange topics and smooth sound caught me just like it did on day one. It’s exciting stuff, disharmony paired with impeccable harmony, trumpets in tune with nifty base-lines and some randomly thrown in ‘oh yeah’s’ for good measure. Strangely, I find that most people I talk to either like or dislike CAKE- no in-betweens. I guess I consider that a good sign. The choice of tune for this cast I found difficult. Meanwhile Rick James was a hot candidate, who takes her nude, as was Commissioning A Symphony In C which defies all earthly descriptions (both of the 2001 Album “Comfort Eagle”). I also toyed with “The Distance” (Fashion Nugget, 1996) of the guy who continues to speed around the track, hugging the curves, long after someone else has left with the cup. I finally decided for one of my all time faves, also off of the 2001 ‘Comfort Eagle’. It is a song about a long line of cars; a line that seems to have formed for ambiguous reasons. It is CAKE in a nutshell, nice guitar licks with varying sounds, spread out ‘ahhs’ and a wicket trumpet happening here and there (not to mention the pumping bass line)…very fine. Goes best with coffee.
